InSpirational Column: He is Our Strength

By Joyce Balentine

What name do you whisper in times of trouble? We have a lifeline available to us. Jesus opened the way to the Throne at Calvary. Psalm 46:1, God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. One of my  favorite scriptures is Psalm 120:1. It simply says, "In my distress I cried  unto the Lord, and He heard me." The last part of the scripture is the part that always makes me fall to my knees. To know that when I cry out to the Lord . . . He hears me.

My grandmother told me a story that happened many years ago. It has to do with this very subject. During a time of great need, she called upon the name of the Lord. She knew that she needed help, and she knew where this help would come from.

It was a hot summer afternoon and my grandmother was in the kitchen cooking dinner. She heard noises from outside. She dried her hands and was walking to the front door when one of the younger children ran inside. Her oldest son had been working on his car and it had fallen on him. She heard his cries of agony, before she reached his side.

She dropped to her knees and saw that thefront wheel was resting on his chest. Something had to be done quickly. My grandfather was working in the fields, and there was no one to help her. She walked to the front of the car and prayed for the Lord to help her. She said His name over and over.She grabbed the bumper of the car and lifted it just enough for the younger children to pull him to safety. Running to his side, she feared the worse. To her surprise, he was awake, but in a lot of pain.

One of the children hopped on an old mare and went to get my grandfather. They took him to the Dr. They lived about 25 miles from town, so the trip was long and arduous. His ribs were broken, but otherwise he made a remarkable recovery.

How was she able to lift that car, and save her son? Some people think that angels may have assisted her that day . . . maybe they did. I'm sure that God uses many ways to help His children. All I know for sure is that she prayed for  help, and help came.

The Trinity is there for us, at all times. When our needs become strong, we have a place to turn. Help is waiting for us. God can see us through the toughest times.

My grandmother was forever thankful for the help that she received that day. She had no one else to turn to, but she knew that she wasn't alone. She believed that God would give her the strength to do what she had to do, and He did. Her faith was strong, as she asked the Lord for His assistance. Psalm 121:1&2. I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.

We may face trials and hardships, but we are never truly alone. The Creator of the universe waits for us to call on His name. Power and strength radiate from the Throne of God. . . it is our main source of help. It leaves me in awe to think that the God of Heaven listens to our cries for help, and then gives us the assistance we need.

Wisdom, grace and mercy flow from God's throne. He will give us help . . . for He is our Father. His love is never ending and His mercy is great.

Lord, take this life of mine and walk with me each day;

Stay close to me, as I kneel to pray.

Lord, help me with the things that I don't understand;

Guide me, and always hold my hand.

Hear me when I call to You, in the still of the night; fill

Me with Your mercy, and Your Light.
